How to Keep Your Furniture Protected During a Move

Furniture is one of the most difficult things to pack when moving house. It’s big and bulky and most importantly, it needs to be protected throughout the move.

Supplies

Firstly, you want to make sure you are stocked up with supplies to properly cover your furniture in the days leading up to your move. Boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, plastic wrap, rope and old towels and blankets will all come in handy.

Disassemble Furniture

As a rule, any furniture pieces that can be taken apart, should be. It makes each piece lighter, easier to move, easier to pack, and reduces the risk of breakage. Wrap each piece including shelves and drawers so that nothing is broken or scratched and ensure they are packed together.

Cover furniture that cannot be disassembled

When it comes to solid furniture that cannot be disassembled such as chairs, cabinets, tables, and cupboards, make sure you always protect the edges with cardboard or bubble wrap as they can easily be damaged or damage other items they may come in contact with. Make sure cupboard doors are secured shut with plastic wrapping and remove any loose shelves.

Protect glass and mirrors

Where possible, detach glass and mirrors and cover them thoroughly with bubble wrap. Make sure to keep glass items together and label them clearly so that nothing heavy is accidentally placed on top of them.

Label items

You may not think it at the time, but when furniture has been thoroughly wrapped, it can be hard to differentiate between one table or cupboard and another, so make sure you label each piece,so you know what’s what. This particularly comes in handy when directing your removalists in the new house.
